Chapter 13: Jax

I ease the door of Georgia’s bedroom shut and tiptoe down the hall. The door to Elle’s room is shut, too, so she must have gone to bed. I go into my room, change into my sweatpants, and make my way downstairs to my home office. I log onto my computer and bring up the EMT recertification roster that Max finished earlier.

I flick through the personnel files. Everyone is on the list except for me. I fill in the details and then send him a text. Thanks for covering for me today. The roster looks great.

You bet, he writes back. How’s the arm?

It hurts like hell. Thanks for asking.

He sends me back an emoji of Superman flexing his biceps. My hero. If I ever need to be pulled from a burning building, I’ll know who to call.

I leave it at that. I don’t want to be congratulated for pulling Elle from her burning house. I wish I could do more for her, and I can’t give her back her house. It obviously meant a lot to her, and now she’s pulling her weight here even though she’s supposed to be a guest.

I go through some other office work from the Fire Department. Me missing a day of work to help Elle didn’t affect anything at the firehouse. I’m glad I can be here for her. She needs me a lot more today than the Fire Department does. I go over everything I’ll need to know for tomorrow, but I stay at my desk a lot longer than I planned. I find it surreal that none of the guys knows about Elle staying here.

How can no one know about something that affects my life so much? She isn’t just my next-door neighbor. I don’t know what she is, but her staying here means something—something big. I wind up messing around in my office until almost midnight. I better go to bed or I’ll be useless tomorrow.

I slip out of the office and switch off the light. I sneak through the dark living room and almost make it to the stairs when something sets my nerves on end. I snap around fast and almost have a heart attack when I see a dim outline across the living room. I brace myself to deal with an intruder before I realize it’s Elle.

She is sitting in the same place at the end of the couch. She curls up with her knees drawn to her chest and gazes through the front window at the street outside. The light from the nearest street lamp shines on the open notebook in front of her.

I creep over there and sit down opposite her. “What are you doing up?” I whisper. “You gave me a coronary just now.”

“Sorry,” she whispers back. “I like to stay up late in the dark. It’s how I get my best ideas.”

“You’ll go blind writing in the dark like this. You should turn on the light.”

She snickers under her breath. “You sound like my mom.
